Process

This web-quest was designed as a short-term introductory sequence over four lessons for year 4's exploring the History strand in Humanities and Social Sciences. Particularly, the topic of the First Contacts.

The students will use the web-quest to complete self-directed tasks that include a range of meaningful resources and activities to consolidate their knowledge. Student's are provided with templates and examples, as well as links to a range of resources to ensure accessibility and enable students to work to their best potential.

Steps learners will go through

Lesson 1

Students will be engaged by being presented with the "Time machine challenge". This involves preparing the students to use their knowledge from this lesson to correctly answer the quiz at the end to build a time machine. Students will follow the journey of a first fleet boat to each stop, encouraging students to explore the variety of resources given at different checkpoints to learn about the origin of the first fleet and it's journey. Students will then learn more specifically about the treatment of the convicts aboard the first fleet through various resources. At the end of the lesson, students will be prompted to take the quiz once they are ready, consolidating their knowledge.

Lesson 2

The lesson begins with a video, to which students post their questions from the video onto a padlet as a diagnostic assessment (later to be used as a consolidating activity). The students will learn about the specific crimes that were punishable by transportation, extended with the access to an online dictionary to find unfamiliar word meanings. Students will then choose one of the given child convicts to learn about. Students must use Canva to create a wanted poster using the information they have found from the given resources.

Lesson 3

The lesson will begin with the read aloud video of the book "Somebody's Land" by Adam Goodes and Ellie Laing. As student's watch the video they will post into a Padlet a brainstorm of words regarding thoughts and feelings from this book. Students will then be lead through a variety of resources regarding the nature of the relationship between the first fleet and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander's from both perspectives. Students must complete a "thought bubble" activity, responding to different scenarios from the given perspective with thoughts and feelings. The padlet from lesson 2 will be shown to consolidate the knowledge at the end of the lesson asking "can you answer any of your questions from lesson 2?"

Lesson 4

In this lesson, students will learn about the daily life of convicts in the first fleet of botany bay. The lesson will begin with a video about the day-to-day life in botany bay. The students must then review their chosen convict from lesson 2 and use the given resources to research more specifically into the experiences of the convict children. Students are provided with templates, examples and tips  before being prompted to write a journal entry in the perspective of their chosen convict.
