The stories of the first fleets
Video Explanation
Implementation
This WebQuest will be implemented every Thursday in the session before lunchtime during the weekly HASS lessons, taking about an hour for each session. This WebQuest will be completed in the first 4 weeks of the school term as an introductory sequence to the overall history unit for the year 4's.

Students will complete the WebQuest individually using an iPad or computer with headphones to allow students to self-direct their learning. The WebQuest is intended to be completely mostly online, however moderations can be made to complete some activities as class/group activities or on paper.

General Capabilities
The knowledge, skills, behaviours and dispositions that will assist students to live and work successfully in the 21st century.

Literacy
Interpret and use language confidently for learning and communicating and participating effectively in society. Students use literacy skills when conducting research and in lesson activities such as the 'thought bubbles' and the journal entry.

ICT
Use ICT effectively and appropriately to access, create and communicate information and ideas; solve problems; and work collaboratively when learning. Students are exposed to a variety of online tools such as Canva, Padlet, Genial.ly, google forms to enhance learning. Students gain skills for researching with relevant websites.

Intercultural Understanding

Appropriate and safe use of iPads and/or computers
-
Developed use of ICT tools (i.e. Padlet, Canva etc.)
-
Independently navigate and synthesise research
-
Ability to take control of their learning and ask for help if something does not work
Enabling
Extending
Throughout the WebQuest is recorded voice notes allowing students that are less capable of reading/written comprehension to understand and complete instructions/tasks. There is a wide range of resources available to allow accessibility to all the information. Picture prompts and clear instructions are given to ensure ease of navigating the WebQuest. Each activity has examples and templates provided.
The range of resources provided allows extension for students who are capable to research more in-depth of the topic being discussed. Each activity can be highly modified to allow freedom of creativity and application of knowledge and skills. Should students finish all tasks in a lesson early, students can play the voyage game, which involves applying knowledge of the health of passengers, jobs aboard the ship, length of the journey, stops throughout the journey and supply stocks to complete the voyage and win the game (encompassing a range of knowledge explored in the lessons). Students doing this can discuss strategy among themselves for rationing and which convicts/crew/captain they choose and why.
